CAFE BAR PASTA CELEBRATES 1 YEAR IN BUSINESS

This fall, Cafe Bar Pasta celebrates its one year anniversary as the west end’s hottest non-Italian, Italian place. As husband-wife team Tom Bielecki and Christine Vieira recount the numbers, they don’t just celebrate pasta: the couple awakes sleepy-eyed locals withReneka-brewed espresso and house-baked pastries in the a.m. and dishes out Chef Jay Scaife’s simple yet unique creations at night. Drawing from tradition while embracing the playful, Cafe Bar Pasta offers quality food and an eclectic modern atmosphere reminiscent of a European bistro.

The last year has been a wild ride,” said Bielecki, co-owner of Cafe Bar Pasta. “Our neighbourhood – Dundas West – is exploding and our kitchen has transformed with Chef Jay at the helm. Each day, I wake up excited… we have big sights for Toronto and the energy here is propelling me forward.”

Kicking off the season with a new 16-dish fall menu, Chef Scaife draws inspiration from his formal training in French, Italian and Japanese cuisines. From chilled octopus and chicken liver-stuffed bone marrow to sweetbread saltimbocca, an 80-day aged rib eye to lobster and corn lollipops, this fusion brings an element of the unexpected to a restaurant with pasta in its name.

The experience doesn’t stop with the artfully-plated dishes: Cafe Bar Pasta features six wines on tap, a selection curated by one of only two Master Sommeliers in Canada,John Szabo. Bielecki sourced industry expert Szabo to hand-pick the list of premium Ontario wines for two reasons: he wanted his patrons to enjoy top quality estate and single vineyard red and whites at lower prices, and to reduce the waste and carbon footprint of his restaurant.

We were aiming to prove to Toronto that you can find upscale food and service in an engaging atmosphere without an unrealistic price tag, and I think we’ve accomplished just that,” adds Cafe Bar Pasta co-owner and established fashion stylist and interior designer Vieira. “The experience of our guests is our priority.”

In the lead up to opening over a year ago, Vieira transformed her father’s former office into a classic, modern space, injected with graphic artwork. The couple commissioned an acrylic piece by internationally-exhibited Toronto-based artist, Jose Ortega, and also incorporated a Maharam wall covering of his design, inspired by organic molecules. Romantic lighting is cast from Flos, Foscarini and Fabbian chandeliers atop white-painted exposed brick and elements including a cork-filled gallery wall (filled from more than 10,000 bottles), a photo gallery featuring over 100 celebrity shots from Dundas West local, George Pimentel’s archives, and a Calacatta marble bar weighing 4000 plus pounds.
