Rhythm Spa – Eyebrow Threading

By on March 15, 2011

Rhythm Spa is a destination or day spa located just a few steps from Toronto’s Eaton’s Centre. A sanctuary of peace, tranquility and comfort to help you relax and rejuvenate.

The spa itself is a 2500sqft spacious and beautiful; bringing quality and affordability together into downtown Toronto. Some of the services offered include threading, facial, waxing, manicure/pedicure, RMT therapy and one of a kind music therapy. In fact, on certain evenings you will have the luxury of enjoying live piano music while indulging in your favourite spa services.

The décor is simple – a typical Spa-zen style. As soon as you walk through the door the smell of light incense will tickle your nose and heighten your sense of smell without irritation. (I personally can’t stand when scents are overpowering.) Also, the spa has always been up to my very demanding standards of cleanliness – which is reassuring information, I’m sure.

The very friendly receptionist greets you while you wait in the designated area where you are served some delicious tea. As you sit (usually only for a brief time) you will notice the very relaxed/calming atmosphere. I am a huge fan of when spas use appropriate, calming colours on the walls accompanied by the relaxing sounds of ambient spa music, whether it be nature inspired sounds (waves crashing, thunderstorm) or instrument inspired sounds (piano, violin, cello etc.) This place makes me want to stay for a relaxing massage every time. (I always happen to be on the go when I pop in to get my eyebrows threaded.)

Personally I can’t speak about any other service that the spa provides as I am dedicating this review to the threading service specifically but from what I can tell the owner, Maria, is a perfectionist so I highly doubt you would be anything but satisfied.

The first time I went for eyebrow threading was with two girlfriends of mine at a Trade Secrets in Square One, Mississauga about six years ago. I was nervous. I had only ever previously been waxed a handful of times before and usually did my eyebrows myself (thinning them out too much and completely butchering them every time!) I was young and still new to this world of beauty secrets. However, I had always noticed how well done both of their eyebrows were and desperately wanted mine to look similar. So needless to say I was anxious to give it a try.

Before I continue my story I think a brief definition of the act itself is necessary as I am often questioned what it is and how it is done.

“Threading is an ancient method of hair removal. It is popular in many Arabic countries, as well as Indian and Persian culture where it is called Bande Abru (“Abru” means eyebrow, and “Band” is the thread). Practitioners use a pure, thin, twisted cotton thread, which is rolled over untidy hairlines, moustaches and so on, plucking the hair at the follicle level. Unlike tweezing where a single hair is pulled out each time, threading can remove an entire row of hair, resulting in a straighter line. However, due to a larger area of hair being removed at once, it can be quite painful for some.” (Wikipedia)

The last statement about it being somewhat painful is true. However, I personally think waxing is a bit more painful especially considering your body tenses up in anticipation to prepare itself for that RIP. Ouch!

To avoid this, during my first experience I learned that if you take one finger just above the brow and place one on the eyelid and slightly stretch it (not too much) it aids in feeling less pain. Also, through my past experiences before I had discovered Rhythm Spa, I found that if done properly you should barely feel any pain.

After the upper and lower eyebrows are threaded (obviously catering to each clients specific preference of how they want their brows shaped) the hair is trimmed with scissors if necessary to achieve that perfectly polished look. I often get compliments on my eyebrows as well as my best friend who also swears by threading.

You know when you see those actresses/singers with their perfect looking eyebrows? I swear it’s threading. It has become so popular over the last handful of years that when I was in New York City there was literally a salon for threading on every block if not closer together.

On a side note, when I was in New York City I took my brother to get his eyebrows threaded and they looked great! I find when men wax their eyebrows it looks too feminine. With threading, you can really get in and sculpt it the way you need to. I would definitely recommend men try it. (Perhaps Mankind Grooming will consider a new service.)

I was obviously satisfied with my first experience of threading and deciding to stick with it was an easy decision– finding a place that I wanted to return to over and over was slightly tougher. It’s like finding that perfect colour technician/hair stylist that fits for you and you built a long-term relationship with that specific place (like me with Civello.) I had tried a few places in Oakville, and then moving downtown Toronto I found it quite difficult to find places that offered eyebrow threading. A male friend of mine – who is eyebrow obsessed – suggested I mission it over to the beaches area if I was adamant on eyebrow threading. It was exactly that; a mission.

Rhythm spa opened up just around the corner from where I was living at the time in the summer of 2010 and it couldn’t have been any more exciting for me. My best friend and I decided to go check it out one evening.

When we walked in it appeared as if a small party was going on. We looked at each other and thought this was our type of place! Wine was being served, along with cheese, crackers and fruit. The magnificent melody of the piano was heard from the next room. I was in heaven! My best friend and I were both so excited for this new gem.

This is the same night I met Maria. She explained it was a networking type of event to celebrate the opening of the spa but this wasn’t the only time we would be hearing the piano played live. Maria explained the spas mission statement as she took a moment to step away from her guests to perform her work of art on my face. My eyebrows were perfect! I was sold.

Tuesdays are an awesome day to hit up Rhythm spa as they offer a “toonie Tuesday” special– eyebrow threading for $2. Can you believe it? It is literally an unbeatable price. (Looks like KFC isn’t the only place that offers grand Tuesday deals!) I have yet to find any other place that does any eyebrow/waxing service for $2. So if you’re a student this is the place for you or if you’re hairy and have to go more often than the average person you won’t feel bad going weekly for $2.

Now, if you Tuesday’s don’t work with your schedule for whatever reason, Rhythm spa offers very affordable yearly memberships. $80 for a year of unlimited threading/waxing. Unbelievable. If none of those prices appeal to you and you prefer to drop in whenever you have a chance – a single session is $8.00.

As a side note, Rhythm Spa also rents out their 2500 sq ft space for TV productions, spa parties, bridal shower parties, corporate parties, birthday parties, seminars, bachelor parties, bachelorette parties, wedding parties and exhibitions. Cool, right?
