Top 5 Films For December

By on December 1, 2014

November brings us movies that make us feel a wide range of emotions: from fear to hope to pure elation. Grab a friend, grab some popcorn, and enjoy the movie!

Dec 5

Reese Witherspoon has garnered critical acclaim for her portrayal of Cheryl Strayed. A woman with absolutely nothing left to lose hikes over a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. It’s a journey about strength and healing and is absolutely inspiring.

The Imitation Game

Benedict Cumberbatch plays the famous Alan Turing who led a team to decipher the German Enigma Code that would eventually help the Allies win WWII. This film is a prime example of “Oscar Bait” and the performances in the film will leave you breathless. It won the People’s Choice Award at TIFF 14, which is generally a good indicator of how successful it will be during awards season.

Top Five

The unexpected gem at TIFF 14 from Chris Rock is sure to keep you laughing all day. A New York comedian meets a journalist who makes him rethink his new career as a “serious” actor. The banter and wit between Chris Rock and Rosario Dawson is hilarious and are a joy to watch.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

Finally. The last film of the trilogy is here.

Into The Woods

From Broadway to Big screen, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt lead an all-star ensemble cast in this fairytale musical. All your favourite characters together in one film plus something about a curse? I’m sold. Because let’s be real, who doesn’t love Disney??

Oscar Watch

December is notorious for being back loaded with lots of films trying to get a last minute qualifying run for the Oscars. A few other films won’t be released in Canada until January, but here are some films that didn’t quite make the cut for Top 5 this month but are sure to play into the awards season.

American Sniper

Big Eyes

Inherent Vice

About Debbie Wang

Full-time student and part-time couch potato. I live for all things entertainment and if I don't respond to your texts within the hour I am either at the movies, too engrossed in my book, or taking a nap. My love for Wes Anderson grows everyday and I'm convinced that Audrey Hepburn is the definition of perfection. Don't ask me what my favourite movie is (or favourite anything for that matter) because I most definitely will have an existential crisis.
